I'm a maintinence machinist in a manufacturing plant. I was told yesterday that we are scheduled for an OSHA audit later this month. This is an auditing firm hired by our company to for see any issues that an OSHA inspection would possibly write us up on. One of other plants got wrote up on not having chuckguards on their drillpresses, so we where trying to figure out what type of guard we will need.
Some I've seem so far look like they would be a real pain in the you know what to deal with. The telescoping round cage looking things don't seem very practical for chip clearance or visibility. I like the large polycarbonate chip shields as seen in Grainger and MSC catalogues Was wondering if any one had any experience with this issue, and what they did to deal with it. Sometimes you can't protect an idiot from themselves. I work in a TAFE college here in Australia. After one internal OH&S (OSHA in the USA) inspection, some clerical type person wanted us to put guards on the lathes so that the operator couldn't come in contact with revolving parts.
I kid you not. Like hello, its a lathe. Manual For Beyond Oasis.
Another one was that the lathes had to have a set of Safe Operating Procedures attached to each machine just in case someone who hadn't been trained in using a lathe got into the workshop after hours and tried to use a machine. Same for the mill and, wait for it, a hand operated pan brake.????? Bureaucracy run rampant yet again.
Regards bollie7. Sometime local OSHA authority can go nuts seeking to make in impression come rating time. You really can't depend on sensible solutions when OSHA dweeps are in a safety frenzy. Here's one approach: Seems to me some stout plastic chip shields on mag bases accessible to the operators a paragraph in the safety bulletin. And a nearby poster for eye protection etc should meet intent to comply.
I just read that link above.according to that, a 'sensitive drill press' may not need a guard.what is a sensitive drill press? I love the 'case study' they bring up where: 'his gloved hand got caught in the drill bit.' We don't need protection from the machines, just the morons around them! I have to comply with OSHA regs because I work at a state institution.
Some of the drill press guards they want me to use are absurd. I see them as simple shrapnel producers. In my experience the number one problem with drill presses is improperly secured work (think helicoptering sheet metal.) Next is whirling stringy chips grabbing loose tools and clothing and flinging/ripping it.
I have self ejecting chuck keys (when I use a keyed chuck.) I just put em on for inspections. Then they go back in the drawer. Lathes are a whole different story. Chuck keys, improperly mounted work, and stringy turnings seem to be the greatest hazards. Available chuck guards and work guards are not as intrusive and flimsy as they are for drill presses.
