Unfortunately, I'm constrained to using either an ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip or a Bluetooth Low-Energy chip (Adafruit BLE UART Friend). After some digging I found out that BLE doesn't have a 'Serial Port Profile' (unlike Bluetooth Classic, as supported by HC-05) and as a result my Bluetooth device won't connect to the serial port.
